Quote of the Day

TI-Guy hits the nail on the head in his comment here.
I don't know: I'm starting think most publications, not just The Western Standard are addicted to controversy since everyone's pretty much run out of stimulating ideas.

To sell papers. That is it. That is all they want.

This is why you do not know the real costs of the things the government has done for you or to you. This is why when the city council cuts costs all you hear about is hockey rinks.

They know what you will respond to.

I'm glad you read blogs. At least you might be pointed to something intelligent and thoughtful occasionally.

Too many hours of work

H/T to Angry Bear.

So, get this, after an extensive study of what happened in the 19th century an award winning economist decided to take a look at the way in which hours of work affect productivity. Guess what, working less didn't create less productivity.

Then he goes on to suggest that there are several reasons for why, against our and our employer's best interested, we would not work less.

Favorite quote from this work reviewing the theory:

Chapman arrived at this conclusion after reviewing a mass of evidence from the 19th century that reductions in the hours of work had not led to proportionate declines in output. From that evidence, he inferred that workers required more leisure time to fully recover from the fatigue of work as industrial methods became progressively more intensive. Thus when the hours of labour were reduced, the better-rested workers were often able to produce as much or more in the shorter hours than they had previously in longer hours.
